Alt text that lives in your store

CoverText finds the images in a Shopify catalogue that are missing alt text and writes it with AI, in bulk. The text lands in the real product data — so it stays there whether or not the app does.

How it works

Scan, generate, and then stop thinking about it

Missing alt text is a common accessibility gap on Shopify stores — invisible to sighted shoppers, but a barrier for anyone using a screen reader, and a missed signal for image search. CoverText closes it in three steps.

Scan

CoverText reads your media through Shopify's Admin API and scores coverage twice — once for Products, once for everything in your Files library. Product images, videos, external video embeds, and 3D models all count, and so do files that were never attached to a product. You get a number and a list of exactly what's missing.

Generate

Select what you want covered, pick a tone — descriptive, SEO, or minimal — and CoverText writes alt text for each image using vision AI. It goes back into the product or file record itself, visible immediately in Shopify's own media settings. Runs go in batches of 25, so a click never hangs waiting on a timeout.

Automate

Steps one and two are a one-off fix, and catalogues don't hold still. On the Autopilot plan CoverText repeats them on a schedule, so images added later get covered without anyone going back to do it. How Autopilot works

Why this one

Real content, not an overlay

A lot of accessibility tooling for Shopify works by injecting JavaScript into your storefront that patches the page as it loads. CoverText doesn't do that. It writes alt text into your product and file records through the Admin API — the same field you'd type into by hand, just filled in for you.

The practical difference shows up the day you uninstall. An overlay takes its fixes with it. Alt text written into your catalogue is yours: it survives a theme change, a migration, or switching to a different app entirely.

  • Nothing runs on your storefront. No script tag, no theme edit, no extra request slowing your pages down for shoppers.
  • The work is permanent. Uninstall CoverText tomorrow and every piece of alt text it wrote stays exactly where it is.
  • It asks for two permissions. Product and file access, and nothing else. CoverText never touches customers, orders, or checkout — it has no reason to.
  • You can edit anything it writes. It's ordinary alt text in the ordinary field. Change a line you don't like the way you'd change any other.

Autopilot

The catalogue doesn't stay fixed on its own

A one-off sweep fixes what's there today. Then new products land, a supplier sends fresh photography, someone bulk-imports three hundred images at 11pm — and the coverage number you worked to get up starts sliding back down.

Autopilot is the answer to that. Pick daily or weekly, pick a tone, save it once. CoverText then scans and fills in what's missing on its own, and keeps doing it without anyone opening the app or remembering it exists.

  • Set it once. Daily, or weekly on a day you choose. Pick the tone new alt text should be written in and leave it alone.
  • It tells you what it did. Every run records whether it completed, stopped at your monthly cap, or hit an error — along with how many images it covered. No silent runs.
  • Run it on demand too. A "Run now" button triggers a full automated pass immediately, so you're never waiting on the schedule to check something works.
  • It respects your cap. An automated run stops at your monthly limit like any other. It can't quietly spend more than you signed up for.

Pricing

Three plans

Billing runs through Shopify, so it appears on your normal Shopify invoice and you change or cancel from your own admin. Every plan stops at its monthly limit rather than billing you for overage — there is no usage meter that can surprise you.

Spot Check

7-day trial

$9 / month

100 images a month. The tier for a store with a known gap and a catalogue you can get through in an afternoon.

  • Products and Files scanning
  • Bulk AI generation, all three tones
  • Coverage dashboard, re-scan anytime

Catalog Sweep

$29 / month

500 images a month. Same tool as Spot Check, sized for a real catalogue rather than a spot fix.

  • Everything in Spot Check
  • 500 images a month
  • No trial — upgrade when you need the room

Autopilot

$79 / month

The plan that runs without you. Everything below happens on a schedule you set once — this is the only tier where CoverText does the work when nobody has opened it.

  • Scheduled runs, daily or weekly
  • New images get alt text without anyone remembering
  • Every run reports what it did
  • Everything in Catalog Sweep, and 3,000 images a month

What CoverText is not

It's a tool for accessibility, not a compliance guarantee or a legal certification. Nobody can sell you either of those, and the vendors who imply otherwise have caused real problems for the merchants who believed them.

It's also deliberately narrow, and here's exactly where the edges are:

  • Alt text only. Colour contrast, unlabelled buttons, and other theme-level checks aren't in this version.
  • English only. The app's interface and the alt text it writes are both English, with no store-locale detection.
  • New products aren't caught instantly. Autopilot picks them up on its next scheduled run, not the moment they're created.

Those are v1 boundaries, not permanent ones. They're listed here for the same reason everything else on this site carries its real status — you should be able to tell whether a tool fits before you pay for it.
